How Can I Help My Pullets Adjust to the Flock?

Post by EggsAndThings »

Good morning, everyone!

I’m new to integrating chickens and could really use some advice.
I’m trying to introduce my two 11-week-old Salmon Faverolle pullets to my flock.
But it’s been a challenge.
The older hens are pecking at them, and the pullets keep hiding in corners.
I’ve ensured they have food and water and they’re sleeping in the coop to stay warm.
But they seem so scared.
Any tips to make this process smoother for them?

Thanks in advance for your help!
I’ll change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot!

Add multiple food and water stations to reduce competition.
Give the pullets more chances to eat and drink without being chased off.

Place hiding spots like small crates or branches in the run so the pullets can escape if they feel threatened. It helps them feel safer while they adjust.

Try using a see-but-don’t-touch setup for a few more days.
Separating them with a barrier lets the older hens get used to the pullets without direct contact.
One day I'd love a house in the country, with some chickens, dogs and kids.

Introduce them during free-range time if possible. The extra space can reduce aggression and help the flock interact more naturally.

It’s normal for some pecking to happen
But watch for injuries.
If things get too rough, separate the pullets and reintroduce them gradually.

I've had success with letting the pullets roam the yard during free time, while the older hens are in the coop. This way, the pullets can get comfortable outside without feeling cornered or threatened. Gradually integrate them when everyone is calm.

Introducing new chickens can be tough. Try using a separate pen for the pullets inside the coop, where they can see the older hens but not interact directly. This helps with gradual introductions, and after a few days, you can allow them to meet with less stress.

It sounds like your pullets are just adjusting. You could try offering a few distractions like treats for the older hens to focus on while the pullets explore their new space. This might give them more confidence and help reduce the pecking.

It's great that you're being patient with the pullets. Sometimes separating them with a physical barrier for a few weeks really helps, giving them a chance to grow bigger and stronger before the full integration. Just be sure to keep checking for any signs of bullying.
