Every time we change out our deep fryer oil, we toss itbut what if the chickens could enjoy it instead? I was thinking of drizzling some over bread scraps as a treat. Has anyone tried this? Is it safe for them, or should I steer clear?

If your oil is free of seasoning, burnt particles, and excessive breakdown, a tiny bit mixed with other food might be okay. However, because used oils can develop harmful compounds, it's safer to opt for natural fats like lard or unprocessed coconut oil instead.

Fryer oil has likely gone through multiple heat cycles, breaking down into less healthy compounds. Chickens can handle fat, but healthier sources exist. Instead of fryer oil, offer animal fat trimmings or sunflower seeds, which provide good fats and essential nutrients.

Many poultry keepers avoid used fryer oil because it can lead to health issues like fatty liver disease and digestive upset. Chickens benefit from natural fat sources in small amounts, but heavily processed or reused oils introduce unnecessary risks. Opt for healthier choices!

If the fryer oil has been used multiple times, it's not a great idea. Reheated oils can create harmful compounds. If you must use it, strain it well, ensure it's not rancid, and only give it in very small amounts.

Chickens need some fat in their diet, but the type matters. Deep fryer oil is often broken down and unhealthy. Instead, mix in small amounts of fresh, unsalted animal fat or coconut oil if you want to provide extra calories.

While chickens enjoy fatty scraps, fryer oil has likely undergone chemical changes that make it less ideal. If you're looking for high-energy winter supplements, try feeding plain cooked eggs, mealworms, or scratch grains instead. These options support their health without unwanted additives.

Some people mix a little clean oil into winter feed, but fryer oil is tricky, was it used for cooking heavily seasoned or breaded foods? If so, it's best avoided. Safer alternatives include plain suet or flaxseed meal for extra calories.

Too much fat isn't good for chickens, and used fryer oil may contain harmful compounds. Stick to natural, clean fats.
